Linda Carreiro
Linda Carreiro is a visual artist, researcher, and writer. With a practice grounded in anatomical study and literary theory, she explores the intersections of corporeality and textuality. Her current project, Working Against Type, examines the effects of physicalized interventions on text and typography in visual art practice, including how the unusual pairing of movement and reading creates choreographic approaches to words. Solo exhibitions related to the body and text include the Center for Book Arts (New York City), Harcourt House (Edmonton), TRUCK Contemporary Art (Calgary), Limerick Printmakers Gallery (Ireland), and Mallin Gallery (Kansas City), as well as group shows in Canada, the US, Europe, and Asia. Over the past thirty years, her work has been generously supported by the Canada Council, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Manitoba Arts Council.
Carreiro has also published writings in journals and book chapters on performance, representations of the anatomized body, and artist’s practice. She received her BFA (Honours) at the University of Manitoba, her MFA at the University of Alberta, and her PhD at Cardiff School of Art & Design, Wales, and currently serves as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Art at OCAD University in Toronto. Carreiro has also worked in gallery education, artist-run governance, arts outreach and international development, with a desire to involve and be involved in local communities.
