Expressions of interest for artists to participate in an intergenerational feminist art exhibition around the Women’s Kit to be launched at OCADU in the fall of 2017.
NOTE: Due to the funding perimeters of this project, this call is only open to Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking Students who are currently OCADU students or recent alumni of OCADU.
We are looking for artists to participate in an exhibition by creating new work in response to archival feminist material in the Women’s Kit.
The Women’s Kit is a cardboard box full of roughly 150 items (pamphlets, records, posters, newspaper reprints, biographies, literature, drawings, collages, filmstrips, photographs, slides, etc.) that relate to women and their socialization. It was produced in 1973 by artist and OISE researcher, Pamela Harris, to be used by high school and college educators. The kit was designed to encourage individuals to observe and question the limitations set for women and how they can realize their fullest potential and gain a sense of history. It also illuminated what history has recorded, what it has omitted, and why.
The kit contains several items that link back to feminist art making at OCA (now OCADU) in the early 1970’s, such as the audio of a panel discussion on campus about the difficulties of being a woman artist. Much of the material still resonates with current politics and art, while also reflecting what is not addressed by the tenets of Second Wave Feminism. As our consciousness has developed over the decades, so has the intersectional approach to these justice issues.
Chosen artists will be invited to make new work in response to the social justice themes communicated in the Women’s Kit and to address the gaps. They will receive an honorarium and will be mentored through installation design, exhibition marketing and promotion, and the planning of an accompanying panel.
A second project, funded by the Ontario Arts Council, will involve high school students from Central Toronto Academy who will be creating artwork for the exhibition this summer at workshops with Curriculum leaders from FAC and Blank Canvases.
