When I was in high school, I use to paint my nails. One thing I always wondered was what was going through my mom’s head when she handed me her nail polish remover. Being assigned male at birth, there are societal constructs that were put onto me based on my genitals. I always thought that there was more to me than what society pigeon holes as “male”.
Later on, I discovered drag. I posed for my friends makeup class, I was interested in Drag, but felt as if this wasn’t me. I later came up with a multi gender persona, named Ivanna Slapavitch. My first drag performance was at a local pride event; in the basement of a Shisha bar in Richmond Hill, Ontario. It was well received, but I wanted to be more than just entertainment. I wanted to do performance art. This year, I did a performance as Ivanna that was different than “typical” drag, as I did not tuck, or wear makeup (!) Instead, I placed a bright LED light over my crotch, representing Pan – Dimensional genitals.
I currently attend OCADU studying Graphic design, with a minor in Art and Social change, which has helped me create my persona as she is today.
